What separates glass from crystal
The dividing line is lead oxide. Ordinary drinking glass is soda-lime glass, made from silica, soda, and lime with no lead added. Traditional crystal is glass with lead oxide mixed in, and that single ingredient is what earns the “crystal” name. The threshold, though, is looser than most buyers assume. Traditional leaded crystal is the outlier: it is softer and more porous, and it is usually specified as hand-wash only, both to protect its clarity and its delicate cut detail.
Lead content also raises a reasonable safety question. Drinking from leaded crystal on occasion is widely regarded as low risk, but health guidance has long cautioned against using lead crystal to store acidic drinks like wine or spirits for long periods, since small amounts of lead can migrate into the liquid over time. That is a large part of why lead-free crystal and soda-lime glass have become the standard for glasses meant to be used daily. Confirm the glass is dishwasher safe if it will see real service, ask how the material takes your chosen decoration method, and match the wall and rim to the setting, sturdier for a busy floor, finer for a gift. Get the material right first and the shape, size, and branding decisions all become easier, because you already know how the glass will feel, how it will hold up, and how your logo will wear on it.
